PLANNING INFORMATION — Always follow current local emergency instructions.
Practical playbooks

Make the decisions while it is quiet.

Write the plan in plain language, keep a paper copy and review it when the household changes.

01

Choose contacts and backups

  1. Select a nearby contact and someone outside your area.
  2. Write names and numbers on paper as well as saving them in phones.
  3. Agree which communication channel to try first and what to do if networks are unavailable.
  4. Include school, care, workplace and animal arrangements relevant to your household.
02

Set two meeting places

  1. Choose a safe place close to home for a local interruption.
  2. Choose a second location outside the immediate neighbourhood.
  3. Check that each person can reach or describe both places.
  4. Reconsider locations when access, mobility or local hazards change.
03

Map neighbourhood connections

  1. Identify trusted neighbours willing to coordinate.
  2. Discuss who may need a check-in and who has useful equipment or skills.
  3. Do not publish sensitive household details broadly.
  4. Agree where verified updates will be shared.
04

Know official sources

  1. Find the responsible local emergency-management channels before an event.
  2. Enable official alerts where available.
  3. Keep a battery radio option if it fits local guidance.
  4. Avoid acting on unverified forwarded messages.
05

Review without drama

  1. Walk through the plan together twice a year.
  2. Update contacts, medicines, accessibility needs and pet arrangements.
  3. Replace expired or damaged supplies.
  4. Note one improvement instead of trying to perfect everything at once.
